INTO THE DEEP BLUE -
INTO THE DEEP BLUE – ACTIVITIES ON SEA AND LAND OPEN TO TRI- SERVICE VETERANS
Into The Deep Blue is one of the many projects that The VC Gallery has designed to provide support for service veterans of all ages in Pembrokeshire; it is funded by The Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust Positive Pathways Programme.
Sean Golder, one of the project leaders, explained that – in keeping with the VC commitment to improve the health and wellbeing of veterans, their families and the wider community – a collaboration has been agreed with Llanion Cove, Cleddau Reach, Pembroke Dock (Activity Centre) to deliver weekly activities, including kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, climbing and walking.
Sean, a veteran of 22 years’ service in the Royal Fusiliers, explained that life can be difficult for people leaving the services, who often find themselves isolated.
“There is a very strong camaraderie between servicemen and women,” he says. “Often we are the only ones who can relate to how it feels to be ‘out on a limb’. The empathy and humour between us are very important, and we can relate to some of the traumatic experiences many have encountered. We want people to know they haven’t been forgotten.
“We intend to be very flexible as we want as many people as possible to come along. We know that some of the men who are interested may want to bring their children. There is a wide range of activities we can enjoy – somebody has already suggested caving – but it will be OK to just sit in the café for those who feel less adventurous.”
Sean himself is qualified to lead all the activities but he sees the project essentially as bringing people together so that they can make friends, share skills, and improve their physical and mental wellbeing through the benefits of ‘blue care’.
Veterans will get together once a week, in the evenings and weekends to help veterans access our services more easily. Come along to an informal meeting on Wednesday 28th of April at Llanion Cove from 11 am until 12 noon to discuss the best times and days for the future.
